Non Khun was created as a minor district (King Amphoe) under Kanthararom district on September 1 1977, with the four tambon Non Kho, Pho, Bok and Nong Kung.[1] It was upgraded to a full district on January 1 1988.[2] Originally spelled โนนคูณ, it was later renamed to โนนคูน.
The district is subdivided into 5 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 80 villages (muban). There are no municipal (thesaban) areas, and 5 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
